Kagemusha Taiko’s award winning youth programme started in Exeter and has been running since 1999. Kagemusha Junior Taiko players take part in weekly term-time sessions, occasional holiday workshops and residential courses – members often stay for many years, some going on to join the adult Kagemusha Taiko Group.

KJT players have the chance to perform in venues such as Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and occasionally in Japan as well as typically headlining the annual National Youth Taiko Concert as part of the UK Taiko Festival, a highlight in the UK taiko calendar.

Taiko isn’t just about drumming – young taiko players have the opportunity to develop their musical ability, performance skills, co-ordination, fitness, confidence and self-expression whilst having lots of fun!

“Participation in taiko, especially through the inspirational leadership of Jonathan Kirby of Kagemusha Taiko, develops concentration, collaboration, respect for fellow performers and respect for the cultures of other peoples….” Derek Kitt, former Chair of National Association of Music Educators

To join KJT you must be aged 10-18. Admission is by annual summer auditions and if invited to join, regular sessions start in September and are once a week during term time. Newcomers are expected to commit to at least one year. If you are interested in joining KJT, please contact us personally.
